If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve been styling at a 4 day With Love, Lenny vintage Levi’s pop-up here in Chicago. I haven’t done longggg event hours in a hot minute and I forgot how much FUN (and exhausting) it is. I pulled an edit of some great pieces from Space 519 (like this top, this belt and this jacket) to use to style some off-duty denim looks and I definitely saw some pre-fall trends starting to emerge. A big one was textural stripes - tees, long sleeves, you name it.

So in the name of limited time and my deep desire to keep you as informed as possible, here is a tight edit of the best striped tees (IMO). These are the ones I already own or have recommended to my clients — from affordable basics to investment pieces.

We’re back after a packed 2 week hiatus and there are finds to be shared. This time of year is always a little difficult shopping wise, as we’re “in-between seasons” and the industry shifts to pushing sales. By mid-July I have my clients focus on restyling items already in their closets and if they’re making purchases, ensuring those work as we transition to fall.

Now if you’ve been here a while you know I have some STRONG feelings on shopping sales. I could go on and on, but I’ll just keep it to this: If you wouldn’t buy it full price, do not buy it on sale. Utilize the heart or wishlist feature on your favorite websites and if something you saved goes on sale, then you know that’s a good purchase. It’s better to have 1 item you’re obsessed with, than 3 that you bought on sale that are just okay.

1. Late Summer Plaid

Button ups are one of my absolute favorite pieces to style. The options are endless and truly look incredible on everyone (*when styled correctly)!! This time of year I love incorporating more fall forward colors and prints in summery materials, like linen and cotton. Great for in-between seasons, especially if you’re looking at pricier pieces. This one, this one, this one, this one (sale!), this one, and this one are all incredible options.

2. Kallmeyer Clemence Pant (but basically all new season Kallmeyer)

Excuse me while I write a love letter to Kallmeyer’s pre-fall collection. Daniella rarely misses, but this season in particular is just…special. Everything from the belts and bags to the blazers and tops. She just has a unique way of making everyday pieces unique, but still wearable. My favorite combination. The new print and material of the Clemence pant, however, is absolutely the #1 for me. It’s drapey and has a very slight barrel leg which flatters almost all body types. I will say this particular pant runs a tad large, so I would size down 1 size.

3. Rue Sophie Corben Parachute Jacket

Gives a unique shape, like Toteme’s Summer Parachute jacket, but for 1/4 of the price. It’s light, unlined and the perfect transitional topper. It also comes in Petite which is amazing if you’re under 5’5. It runs oversized, so I’d size down - I took an XS Petite. Also have this trench from them and it’s also a 10/10.

4. Else Bare Strapless Bra

A few newsletters back I shared about the Else Sandra Suit which honestly changed my life. Since then, the brand has been kind enough to send a few more pieces from their collections and the goodness just keeps on getting better. As someone with a large chest (we’re talking 32E) wearing a strapless bra just isn’t something I can comfortably do. They’re usually heavily padded (pass) and just end up either falling down or making me look even bustier (pass pass). The Else Bare Strapless Bra changed everything for me. It stays up without pinching or squeezing le girls and gives shape without the bulk. I wore it all day yesterday with a thin strapped silk tank. A miracle.

5. Transitional Flats

We’ve reached the point in summer where the idea of a light jacket and a pair of loafers starts to sound pretty exciting. It’s still extremely hot so layers are out, but let me introduce you to what I call “the transitional flat.” Something that works in both summer and fall (and winter, depending on where you live), and gives a nod to the upcoming season without committing too early. It could be the color, the materials, the shape, you name it. Here are some of my favs.

Start with a rough schedule and loose color palette. This will help with overpacking, but ensures everything goes together so you can shift looks around as needed based on weather, schedule changes, etc.

I actually had a client styling/packing session the day after I got back and I used this same method on her. She ended up wearing everything she brought and mixed and matched pieces when she was there. Ideal!

Here’s how mine started.

Once you have your schedule, it’s time to start building outfits. If you own a clothing rack, now’s the time to bring it out. It takes a bit of extra time, but I strongly encourage you to try every outfit on before committing to it. If a look isn’t right in the comfort of your own home, it won’t be right on a trip. Trust me.

Lastly, be honest about your travel personality. NYC is a good destination to put this to the test. Are you the person who goes home to change outfits before a dinner res? Or once you’re out and about, that’s it? Truthfully, unless I have an event or something specific in the evenings, I like the day to roll seamlessly into dinner. Likely because if I go back to the hotel I realize I’m exhausted and have a hard time going back out. But either way, know yourself! There’s no need to pack those heels that only go with one evening look if you know you’re not the person changes before dinner.

Some Tricks of the Trade

• Travel comfortable, but chic.

  • Unless you’re flying overnight or with your kids (all bets are off) try to be a bit more put together. Less to pack in your suitcase and you’ll feel better when you arrive

• Go trusted over new.

  • Try to bring pieces you’ve worn before and know you love how they look/feel.

• Bags go inside of bags.

  • Bring a large carry-on tote for on top of your suitcase and place your purses inside that tote, inside of one another. More space in your suitcase, less damage to your bags.

• Packing cube it.

  • They really do work. You’ll fit more in a small space. Promise.

• Function vs fashion.

  • I know I keep repeating myself, but be honest about how you explore a city…are you a walker? Do you exclusively uber or drive? This should dictate footwear choices. Be real with yourself though, because blisters f*ing suck.

There is a way to be “on theme” while staying true to your personal style. Look, if you’re the person who owns a RL flag sweater more power to you. But if you don’t already, there is no need to buy one now. I would, instead, suggest 1 of 2 things:

• Create a festive adjacent look with pieces you already own. Think navy blue stripes, white denim, etc.

• Buy a piece or two that creates a look you’re excited about. The KEY is to only buy something you’d wear any other day of the year

While there was an overt display of Knicks gear going on this past week (understandably so), I was focused on what the cool NYC moms were wearing walking their Bugaboos or on the park benches. There is an important cross section of function and fashion as a city mom, so you know whatever these women are wearing has been tried and tested, but is also on trend.

I will spare you my creepy iPhone snaps, but will absolutely provide the relevant style updates.

CROPPED PANTS

We’re talking everything hitting from between ankles and knees. The amount of these linen track pants (just restocked in all colors/sizes) I saw was actually wild. Some with a cropped white tee, some with a tight white tank. I also saw a lot of cropped wide leg poplin pants like these and these. Usually paired with a stripped baby tee and a mesh tote. OVERSIZED BUTTON UPS

Absolutely no surprise here, as these are the optimal functional fashion piece. There was a lot of thin white and vintage style gingham, but what I also saw a lot of were black button ups styled open with a tight black tank underneath. Cuffed denim on the bottom and an oversized tote. Simple, chic, functional and very capsule wardrobey.

HALTER TOPS

Because who really needs straps when it’s 112 degrees out? Last year’s sheer cotton tank is this year’s halter top. I saw everything from wafey cotton to slim and sexy black. What I loved most is that they were paired back with casual linen or cotton tie waist pants and flip flops. This is an amazing breezy linen option, this one is a bit dressier and this one is ideal for a casual cool look.

CARGO / BOARD SHORTS

These were everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Mini versions, long versions…it was all happening. From the super casual and cool to the chic and tailored. I snagged these gorgeous ones while visiting (seen here) and paired them with a slinky tank for an al fresco happy hour.

MONOCHROME

This is no new concept, but there is something so effortless about it. And honestly? An all shades of white or black outfit makes getting dressed easy and saves time, but still looks put together and intentional. Ideal for the busy mom. And please - don’t be afraid of (washable) white with a babe! Bleach is a beautiful thing.

• Still Here Sport Jeans in Pear. All. Over. These are restocked and ready for action.

• Onitsuka Tiger sneakers, mainly white and yellow.

Reporting live from my hotel bed in NYC!!!! I’m here for the week for meetings, client styling sessions and my sister’s store opening. So a lot of work, a lot of fun.

This past week has been a blur of client edits, toddler play dates and packing but I do have a few fashion finds to share that feel IMPORTANT.

I’m nothing if not dramatic. Let’s go.

1. Crown Affair Overnight Serum

Listen, I’ve tried a lot of hair serums. As someone with thick, curly and pretty frizzy hair, anything promising to tame the mane is worth a try in my book. Crown Affair’s Overnight Serum is IT for me. I use it on my ends before bed, but also as a refresh in the morning to smooth out any weird kinks from sleeping. Also, a huge fan of their hair gel because summer means a slicked back bun for me. And while we’re here their hair clips are insane. How those little babies hold up ALL my hair without giving me a headache is wild.

2. The Carpenter Pant

Denim’s cooler sister. A category once monopolized by Carhartt (not WIP, but actual work pants) is now overflowing in choices. Nili Lotan’s Shon pant took over last year, but my heart is with Jamie Haller’s version. If you are going Nili, I just put a client in these and they’re more timeless IMO. My beloved The Row Vendula pants are sadly sold out, but I also have this Polo version and they give the same vibe. These Citizen’s of Humanity pants are not truly carpenters, but if you like a wide-leg style they’re great. These ones and these ones are more classic.

3. Renggli White Tee Restock

I’m always a bit suspect of celebrity brands or collabs because I find the pieces tend to fit poorly and the panic purchase energy is high. Neither of which I can get behind no matter who’s name is on the label. That said, Morgan Stewart has done a really great job with her label, Renggli. They strike a great balance of relevant without being too trendy and fit feels well thought out. As a basics snob (k, I said it) I will say she kills it in this category. The white long-sleeve tee is one of my favorites (I wear a medium) and just got restocked since it’s been sold out for months. Don’t sleep on the baby tees or light silk/cashmere polos.

4. Canvas Totes

When we think summer tote, most of us think raffia. But! A more casual (and durable) option is the canvas tote. You can absolutely go the L.L.Bean route, but if you’re craving something more interesting I’ve got you. My absolute favorite of the moment is Kallmeyer’s cottage tote. The Row made a beautiful, smaller tote in brown. Toteme’s version is larger and leans more classic. Speaking of classic, if that’s your vibe you cannot do better than a RUE de VERNEUIL. This Staud one is playful and gives The Row Idaho at 1/10th the cost. And if you’re really wanting playful, go for a Call It By Your Name tote.

5. Sandals (that aren’t flip flops)

Listen, I love flip flops. They’ve shamelessly become my entire personality the last 2 months. That said, there is more out there, despite what recent searches on Pinterest may suggest. Whether you don’t like the casual nature of the style, need more support, don’t like basically walking on the cold hard ground or whatever it may be, there is a wide world of sandal options out there for you. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Comme Si Button-Ups

I’m sorry, but there is just no better. People ask about a death row meal…these shirts are my version of spicy vodka rigatoni. The fit, materials and colors are all 10/10…no notes. Sizing wise, I have them in both small and extra small in the cotton, silk and flannel depending on how I want them to fit.

2. AGOLDE and RE/DONE Denim

If it’s not vintage Levi’s, it’s AGOLDE or Re/Done. There are SO many denim options out there — and trust me, I’ve put my clients in most of them — but these are the brands that consistently hit with fit, no matter the style. The AGOLDE 90’s mid rise straight will always be my tried and true. The Low-rise slim (no stretch) is another top. If you’re shorter (as in, under 5’6), the Re/Done Ollie jean is for you. I also love the 90’s jean and the Beau jean cuffed. If we’re talking denim shorts, my go-tos are the AGOLDE Dame, the SLVRLAKE Walker and the Still Here Good shorts.

3. Emme Parson’s Loafers

I’ve tried so many different pairs of loafers, I would shamelessly consider myself an expert. As with a lot of fashion these days, it’s hard to find shoes that are made well, are comfortable and are under $1,000(!?) Emme Parson’s shoes hit all of those categories, and then some. Loafers are the staples, but the woven High Throat Ballerina flats and Meta flip flops are my other favorites. They only do whole sizes, so if you’re in between I recommend buying 2 sizes and returning or buying the 1/2 size up.

4. Organic Basics Tees

It’s hard to find the right balance of fit, feel and price — because no matter how careful you are with your white tees, the armpits will eventually turn a dingy shade of yellow, if you don’t stain them with rose first. Organic Basics tees come in a cut for everyone and they all machine wash and dry (yes, dry!) beautifully. My favorites are the True Boxy Tee (I wear a small) and the True Regular tee (I wear a medium). Other brand favorites include the LESET Margo, Pointelle and Nando tees, RE/DONE x Hanes Classic tee, Jamie Haller V tee, and Flore Flore Car tee.

5. Toteme Jackets

Trenches, country coats, leathers, shearlings. I don’t think I can remember a time when Toteme didn’t make my favorite jackets. I have worn their country coat for the last 4 years and their new season drop waist trench gave me a whole new meaning to life. They are absolutely an investment, but made with the top materials and will last you. I like to think of them as classics, with a twist. The cotton collared drawstring jacket and the summer parachute jacket are next on my list.

*no matter the style, their jackets run OVERSIZED. I wear a 32 or XXS in most. These smaller sizes are more limited so if this is you, buy early or off-season during a sale.

6. Jamie Haller Flats

As simple and chic as it gets. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I reach for these multiple times per week, and I’ve passed the obsession on to my clients. They just did a full restock on their website, but they sell out quickly so if they’ve been on your mind, now is the time to jump. Anything by Le Monde Beryl or MANSUR GAVRIEL are also beautiful at a similar price point. The Margaux Demi flat is going to be the more cost effective, but still really good option. I would equate the Jamie Haller flats closer to a The Row shape and feel (if price isn’t a consideration, you can do no better) and the Margaux flats are closer to a Chanel flat style in structure.

*Margaux shoes come in narrow, medium and wide widths as well as half sizes so you can really dial in on the fit

7. The Row Bags

Specifically the Banana bag, the Peggy clutch and the Marlo 14. If you’re looking to invest in something truly timeless (and aren’t ready or willing to succumb to the Hermes game) there is nothing more classic than a The Row bag. They are beautifully made and genuinely get better with age. The Agnes 12 has been in my cart for longer than I care to admit. However, if you love this minimal aesthetic, but not the price tag, Aesther Ekme or Valesque make bags that give a similar vibe at a less shocking price.

8. Jenny Bird Earrings

I have been wearing the Jenny Bird Paige Puff earrings for at least 5+ years and they’re still my most complimented, which is wild. They have an incredible assortment of statement pieces, from earrings to anklets, and the price point couldn’t be better. Plus, they’re water resistant?! The Florence and Monroe are top styles for my clients. Earlier this year the JB team launched their new Fine collection of lab grown diamond and 14k gold pieces and the Stacked Baguettes have become a staple. The team let me know they’re going to be launching more styles throughout the year so stay tuned for that!

It’s interesting…when it comes to having a stylist, some people are proud of it and some hold it close like a secret they’ll take to the grave. I was just doing a try-on session with a client this past week and she said something that really stuck with me.

“…I wish more women knew that working with a stylist doesn’t mean you lack personal style. Before hiring you, I think that was my hangup. I am now seeing my clothes, and shopping, in a completely new way.”

Can I get this tattooed somewhere?! There’s nothing wrong with consulting a professional. This is as true for electrical work as it is for getting dressed.

What A Stylist Actually Does

I’m not sure if it’s from the movies or celebrity culture in general, but there seems to be a lot of miss information out there about what stylists actually do.

• Myth: Stylists just shop for you
  Reality: We edit, refine, and build looks you can actually repeat

• Myth: You need a big budget
  Reality: Most of my work is filtering and reworking what clients already own

• Myth: It’s only for events or special occasions
  Reality: It’s actually about your daily uniform

• Myth: A stylist needs to be have the same style as you
  Reality: Our job is to help you define and elevate your style…whatever that is

We clean out and organize closets, identify gaps in wardrobes, and find pieces to fill them. We help our clients define their style and build looks that make getting dressed feel easy and fun.

Here’s the truth: most people don’t need a whole new wardrobe. They just need someone to help them define their point of view and put it all together.

The Real Reasons I Get Hired

Let’s talk pain points. These are the ones I hear the most.

• “I like shopping and have a closet full of clothes, but never have anything to wear”

• “The clothes/styles I like never fit me right”

• “I wear the same thing every day”

1. Margaux Palermo Sandal

Margaux has been around for a while, but it was only recently that I started to take notice. Their styles shifted and they found their groover. They’re one of my favorite brands right now for excellent quality at a good price. Right now, I’m loving their Palermo sandal in Espresso Nappa. the ankle strap is so chic and we all know my feelings on a square toe. They’re great with both dresses and jeans which is a rare find and come in medium, narrow and wide widths for optimal fit. If you’re in the market for a ballet flat, the Demi is my go-to. Try your true size and up a 1/2 size. Fit, as with most things, is dependent on material.

2. AYR The Culture Jeans

If Spring was a pair of denim, it would be these. I’ve put so many clients in these jeans and somehow they seem to work on everyone. AYR always has a great eye on fit, but these have really stood out. They come in multiple lengths (bless) and the lighter wash gives a vintage feel without the stress of the hunt.

3. Striped Tees

This one’s for my jeans and tee crowd looking for a fun, low commit way to add some interest to their tried and true outfit foundation. This is also my fun summer hack for layering without the bulk. Tied around the waist? Chic. Over the shoulders? Chic. There are so many colors, cuts and price points out there so this is a fun style to play around with.

4. Balenciaga Rodeo Bag size Medium in Tan Cowboy Leather

Okay, so I actually pre-ordered this bag months ago while I was in LA. I went into the store, tried it on and something was just off. I left without it and honestly? I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The tan leather, size and crossbody option (helloooo mom life) was just so good. And why did it look so great on everyone else? When it came back in stock online I decided to reorder it and try it again at home. I’m a firm believer that things feel different when styled with your own pieces. And I’m so glad I did! Turns out the straps on the one I tried were put on wrong which is why it was sitting weird (feels like a big miss on the SA’s part, but I digress). Since receiving, I literally have not taken it off. It fits SO much but never looks bulky, there are so many ways to wear it, the shoulder strap fit’s comfortably over thicker sweaters/jackets and the leather is droolworthy. I don’t think there’s a better mom bag around.

5. Merit Beauty SPF Skin Tint

We visited my parent’s this past weekend for Mother’s Day and one of my mom and my favorite things to do while my son is napping is style looks for her. She saves things she’s struggling to wear or needs an honest sounding board to keep/sell until I’m there and we go to town. This goes for beauty/skincare as well. I brought a new tinted SPF I had received and we did a side-by-side comparison of another SPF she’s been wearing and were SHOCKED by how much better this one was. Just enough coverage, no weird cast or collecting on dry skin/little facial hairs and stayed on all day. She ordered on the spot! I also love this one for no tint and this one for an extra glow.

If you’re a mom, I hope you’re reading this from bed with a hot coffee in hand taking a well deserved second to yourself.

When I first moved to Chicago, I knew I needed to find *my* workout. The one that lit me up and made me excited to go. I joined a beautiful gym and loved the classes, but still felt something was missing. It took me a bit, but I realized at 35 and as a mom I wasn’t just looking for a workout. I was also looking for a community.

A friend recommended I try out Studio Forma and after my first class I was HOOKED. Jess Anzalone is the founder and main instructor and by some miracle, I was able to jump on a spot off the waitlist. Her classes open a week in advance and book up in under 30 seconds. That first class was beyond challenging in the best way and no two classes are ever the same. Jess has somehow built this truly inspirational community of women and a one-of-a-kind workout at the same time.

She and I grabbed coffee on a day after my first week of classes and she showed up in leggings and a big fur coat with the most genuine smile. An icon. We chatted all things style, lifelong fitness and boy mom life. We could have kept going for hours. Instead, we decided a fun interview here would be even better.

Chelsea Cooper Braun: Tell me. How did you get into fitness? Where does your passion come from?

Jess Anzalone: I first got into fitness around age 20, in college. This is where I fell in love with movement and what would now be called function training. I started studying to get my certifications while going to school and once certified (clearly very important to me, even when I was younger!) took on my first client. Seeing her progress and drive turn into a love of movement was sort of my light bulb moment. I remember thinking, “I really have something to offer here.” I can help people find a passion and pleasure in movement. From there I started teaching group classes, taking on more clients and things started to take shape.

CCB: Fast forward to recent years you created your own workout and company called Studio Forma. Can you talk about what that entails and why you built it that way?

JA: Being in the industry for so long, I’ve probably taught every type of workout. I’ve always been intrigued by the range—from Pilates, barre, yoga, and weight training to the early days of TaeBo on VHS and Winsor Pilates on DVD (laughs). When I was doing market research before opening the studio, I noticed most studios specialize in just one method. I wanted to intentionally blend movement methods I’ve found to be most beneficial to the body and mind. That’s how Studio Forma was created. It combines all of the best from different theories, practices and workouts. It’s not about only lifting light, or only lifting heavy, or only low impact cardio. We’re doing all of it, with a focus on form and function. To make it more concise, we call it The Blend, but at the end of the day it’s all functional movement.

CCB: Let’s talk fitness fashion. What are your favorite brands for fitness clothing?

JA: Oh my gosh, so many. I love P.E. Nation and The Upside. Two great Australian labels. Set Active and Splits59 do amazing sets. Live The Process and Daughter Lessons onesies. Beyond Yoga does great leggings. I’ve also heard good things about Literary Sport.

CCB: Are there any fitness myths that you wish would go away? Anything that you wish got more hype?

JA: Talking myths, honestly no. I think movement in general is a beautiful gift and whatever that looks like to you is amazing. Just keep it safe! One thing I do wish we talked about more is the importance of resistance training for women. For your bones, for your joints. That said, lifting weights combined with other intentional movements that lengthen, strengthen, and keep the body flexible is where you see changes.

CCB: Why do you think so many people feel like they’re falling off their fitness goals?

JA: Consistency. Staying consistent with fitness and nutrition. As women and especially as moms, we have a tendency to put ourselves on the back burner. I think it takes finding that special way of movement that ignites something inside of you and until that happens, things can fluctuate.

CCB: If you’re running from a class to a meeting or somewhere for your son, how do you feel pulled together quickly even if you’re still in your fitness clothing?

JA: Depending on the weather, an oversized cardigan or leather jacket. Those are my go-tos. I always try to add in some layered jewelry and slip on flats or loafers instead of sneakers. And I always have a great pair of sunglasses!

CCB: What should women know about strength training?

JA: First and foremost, strong muscles support strong bones and good posture—everything begins with that foundation. As women age, natural shifts in the body can impact bone density. Strength training helps build lean muscle, supporting the health and resilience of our bones, ligaments, and tendons.

CCB: I love that. What’s your favorite item you splurged on recently?

JA: I just bought a new pair of Chanel loafers and this gorgeous oxblood Celine bag in Paris.

CCB: What’s your approach to fitness when traveling and how do you advise your clients?

JA: Carry a resistance band and deflatable pilates ball. Try to fit in 20 minutes of good movement where you can, make it total body for ease. If you can sneak in a pilates class, great. If not, walk! Just try to get in some movement every day. Don’t stress!

CCB: I will plug this because you’re so humble, but you recently launched an on-demand platform that’s perfect for travel. What made you want to get into that space knowing you have such a successful studio here in Chicago?

JA: (Laughs) So how it started…I had people reaching out who had heard about the class or maybe came to one while visiting and were wanting more. I just felt there were so many people who could benefit from this workout. The on-demand platform actually has a whole travel section. Less equipment (if any) and intentional movement to make the most of limited time. There’s something for everyone - short and sweet and long and lengthy.

CCB: Shifting gears a tiny bit, how would you describe your personal style?

JA: I would say classic with an edge. I love clean lines, and a good fit to my body, but I’m all about balance. If its tight on the top, it’s looser on the bottom. But overall, I focus on timeless pieces and cuts. I tend to gravitate toward higher end items that will be in my closet forever.

CCB: Simple and elegant, like the aesthetic of your home and studio! What are some of your favorite brands for everyday?

JA: I love Re/Done, Jenni Kayne does a great cardigan, Ganni has some really fun pieces, Extreme Cashmere, Celine for sneakers and Chanel loafers are my favorites. I love mixing high and low.

CCB: What are your favorite spots in Chicago?

JA: Doppio is my favorite for coffee or an iced tea and Juice Rx for a smoothie. Gibson’s Italia and Bavette’s are my favorite date night spots. Liv Aesthetics and The Wrinkle Fairy do all of my everything skin care related. Lipo Massage for a French lymphatic drainage massage. Oh, and Flora in Lakeview does the best flower arrangements.

Spring is FINALLY in full swing over here and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I’ve recently found myself gravitating towards lighter, easier layers which I must say, is feeling really good. I will always be a vintage denim girl at heart, but I am ready for breezy linen and crisp cotton.

I was deep in client appointments and edits this week, so I have a pulse of some great newness that I’m excited to share.

Let’s goooo.

1. All things Jamie Haller

What started out as a simple leather loafer operation in her LA garage, has turned into a full collection of high quality, functional ready to wear. I ordered a variety of items from her spring collection and for the first time in as long as I can remember, I literally kept every. single. thing. WHAT?! Actually unheard of. And the craziest part? I’ve put clients onto her pieces and they’ve had the same reaction. I love this pair and this pair of denim, this tee, these trousers, these raw denim shorts and these cotton pants that I literally have not taken off since I got them. Her walking sandals are sold out in my size but they’re on my wishlist.

2. Valesque tote

In my humble opinion, there is no better bag for the price. The thin leather strap is chic yet durable and the rain resistant nylon toes the line of both function and fashion. I had absolutely zero need for this bag, but after recommending it to so many clients who adored, I influenced myself. I also love this one in the beige gold and this longer shoulder strap style in green or brown.

3. Cotton Poplin pants

I could literally go on your DAYS about my feelings towards cotton poplin pants, but I’ll just leave you with recommendations for a few of my favorite pairs. There just is really no better summer pant. Suzi Kondi does the Delos pant in cotton which is so simple and chic. Reformation just launched a ballon pant version. J.Crew’s version is amazing for the price. Deiji Studios’s new one is a classic (size down). These Róhe trousers (on sale!) have been sitting in my cart for an embarrassing amount of time and I just hit purchase. I also love how simple these are! Basically. you can’t go wrong!

4. Leset Barb Slip Skirt

This is not a style I would normally gravitate towards, as I’m a pants and shorts loyalist at heart. However, something about the styling of their recent campaign just spoke to me on a wild level. I literally ordered the tee in Aqua (not a hard sell to get me into another color of the Margo) and this skirt in Watercress the second I saw the campaign. It arrived and I was shocked by how much I loved it. The perfect summer look. The skirt hits this cool, 90’s vibe (I think it’s the length) and the tee makes the look feel as wearable as denim shorts and a tank. Will be styling this with my Khaite snakeskin Mila heels (similar here) for a fun twist.

5. Flip Flops

No, not Havianas. But honestly? I wear my square toe version more often than I care to admit. We started to see flip flops take a center stage last year with The Row’s version and they’ve been exploding since. Ancient Greek’s jelly and leather versions were sold out most of last summer. Christopher Esber created their Jo Thong version that sells out every time a new color launches (I am SO excited about this red pair). Black Suede is doing something nearly identical for half the price. A.Emery does their Kinto in simple leather and suede. Emme Pearsons’ Meta square toe flip flops have a cushy footbed that make they ridiculously comfortable. This Britt Netta mesh version is calling my name. With any flip flop, I love pairing them with a slightly more elevated outfit to create some contrast and interest.

So where do I recommend you spend the money? Materials that cannot be faked…or faked well. Leather is #1. We alllll know what it’s like to open up a super cute leather piece you scored only to discover it’s actually a mix of materials you cannot pronounce and feels (and likely is?!) like plastic. Leather cannot and should not be faked. It’s timeless - it wears beautifully (if you take care of it — more on that below) and a good leather piece will stay in your closet for decades. Literally.

When investing in leather, my first recommendation is always a leather jacket.

Not All Leather Is Created Equal

Now, let’s get honest here. Are you paying a markup for a leather piece from Saint Laurent? Yes, yes you are. However, I will say this: if you’re looking for an investment piece items from a brand like Saint Laurent actually hold their value and truly get better with time and wear. And the quality is…BEYOND.

That said, the price tag doesn’t always match the quality. These are two things I always look at:

1. The Leather Itself (this is everything)

Not all leather is created equal—and brands rely on the fact that most people don’t know that.

• Full-grain leather = gold standard
  You’ll see natural imperfections, grain variation, depth. It ages beautifully.

• Top-grain leather = slightly processed, still very good
  Smoother, more uniform, but less character over time.

• “Genuine leather” = marketing language
  Often lower quality, heavily corrected, won’t age well.

The bottom line: If it looks too perfect, it probably is.

2. Look at the Details (where brands cut corners)

This is where “expensive-looking” vs actually expensive really shows up!

• Stitching: tight, even, no loose threads

• Hardware: weighty zippers, not flimsy

• Lining: smooth, durable, not static-y polyester

Pro Tip: Flip it inside out—that’s where the truth is.

The difference between a good leather jacket and a great one isn’t the logo—it’s how it feels in your hands, how it moves on your body, and how it ages without asking permission.

Caring For Your Leather

The goal when investing in a leather jacket is that it lasts (close to) forever. Take care of it properly!!

1. Don’t Over-Clean It (pleaseeeeeeee)

• Spot clean with a damp, soft cloth

• Let natural wear happen, that’s the patina we want!

My Rule: If it’s not visibly dirty, leave it alone.

2. When in Doubt, Use a Specialist (I feel like this goes for everything?!)

For anything beyond minor care:

• Oil stains

• Deep cleaning

• Structural repairs

Pro Tip: Go to a leather specialist, not a standard dry cleaner.

Yes, good leather is expensive. It just is! But there are a wide range of options to fit different budgets and I’ll say it again: this is where to spend your money.

1. Suzie Kondi Samos Sweatshirt

It is no secret how much I love Suzie Kondi pieces (I wrote about the linen sets I’ve had for years here). I recently purchased the Samos sweatshirt in terry and have to actively hold myself back from wearing it everyday. The new spring colors are gorgeous and I’m now debating ordering in the light pink. More colors and sizes here. I wear a size medium.

2. Counter Glow First Serum Primer

I was recently gifted a few products from Counter and I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised how much I like them. The standout by a long shot has been the Glow First Serum Primer that I have been putting on as the last step in my skincare routine. Makeup glides on and stays looking like skin the entire day. It’s actually magic. Close runner-ups are the hydrating serum and lip balm.

3. Baseball Tees

These started popping up this fall and have grown in popularity to spring. I love how versatile they are and easily bring interest to an otherwise basic outfit. Tibi does a fun V-neck sweatshirt version. COS has them in brown and blue. Leset just launched the Margo in a midnight version. This one and this one are also fun.

4. Miu Miu Fisherman Sandals

I have mixed feelings on fisherman sandals. They can easily go from chic and unique to cheap and frumpy. When I saw the recent season Miu Miu versions in person though, it was an instant YES. The gold is perfect if you want something a tad dressier, but I was super drawn to the same version in brown. They also made a slightly chunkier version that I recently secured for a client. These, these and these are slightly more affordable versions.

5. Autry sneakers

One of my favorite “if you know you know” brands. They’re a great price and look great with sweats or jeans. My favorite styles are the Reelwind and Windspin. They have been added into the weekly rotation alongside my Salomons, Onitsuka Tigers and classic Converse high tops.

But here’s the thing. The most stylish women don’t follow rules. They know themselves and dress to highlight their best features. They understand proportions. They wear clothes that fit the life they lead. And often times, that life means pilates in the morning, work and then school pick up and soccer practice. Now, this doesn’t mean all style flys out the window in exchange for functionality. Quite the contrary. I’m actually advocating that the two can coexist pretty harmoniously.

This brings me to today’s topic: leggings. I believe it was Blair Waldorf who infamously berraided a schoolmate because she wore leggings on the weekend and “…LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!” But with all due respect to the queen B, I wholeheartedly disagree.

The truth is, we all wear leggings. For function. For comfort. For ease. So why try to push that aside in the name of so called fashion rules? I’m just not that type of stylist. Your style should work with you, not against you. So instead, let’s look at how we can elevate leggings to bridge the gap between function and fashion.

6 Ways To Style Leggings

Add a leather jacket. Layer some necklaces. Slick your hair back and add some oversized sunnies. Pick the wrong shoe. Grab a clutch instead of your typical tote. Mixing in unexpected pieces like this is what takes leggings from workout staple to everyday life.

To no one’s surprise, there is some killer beach style happening as well. I’ve already spotted two Matthieu Blazy for Chanel bags and this new for spring Loewe tank. Saint Laurent sunglasses have taken center stage. Janessa Leone continues to be everyone’s favorite sun hat. And as always there are raffia bags abound, everything from The Row to Reformation.

1. Suzie Kondi Linen Sets

If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a while you’ll note this is hardly a new find, but it’s one I continue to wear on every warm weather trip so I felt it deserved a mention. I have the Saria top, Hera bloomers and Delos pants all in both black and white. I cannot recommend enough. I mix and match the bottoms based on the weather and the linen has really stood the test of time (and washing). They’re easy to pack and can be dressed up or down. I could go on and on. I will say these sets run a bit big (I take an XS in both the tops and bottoms) so just note if ordering.

2. Pucci Cover Up

As the weather warms, I crave a bit more color and pattern. Shocking! I try to pack in color stories for most quicker trips to ensure all pieces mix and match together so outfits are a breeze. I was immediately drawn to this cover up and it was the perfect piece to add a little interest to my black and brown bathing suits. This one is also gorgeous!

3. Matteau Swim

And while we’re on the topic of bathing suits, season after season my Matteau one pieces are what I reach for most. Being postpartum (can I still say that after 13 months?) I love that they’re a bit thicker in both fabric and straps so they really hug it all in nicely. A close second for me is the Eres Aquarelle, but I will say the fabric is thinner and I feel they’re a bit more fragile. After each trip, I always hand wash my suits with this detergent to remove all the salt + chlorine and lay flat to dry.

4. Reformation Olina Pants

Another tried and true. These are the easiest everyday linen pants I’ve found. I love that they don’t have pockets which creates a slimming look through the hips and honestly? A crinkled linen pocket is the worst. They come in a petite and regular length and a few different colors. For reference, I’m 5’5 and take a size small petite. The length hits me right above my foot. Perfect!

5. One Skin Sunscreen

I have incredibly sensitive skin and sunscreen is always something that gives me a rash. I’ve spent years trying different brands to find one that provides enough coverage and is also sensitive skin approved. One Skin is my hero. I use both the body and face when we’re at the beach. Their spf lip balm (DO NOT forget to sunscreen your lips!!) is what I use everyday. A close second is the body and face sunscreen from Ultra Violette. I was also recently sent the Colorescience Face Shield in Light and that has been working well, too.

For any moms with sensitive skin babies, I use this Mustela face stick and this Earth Mama body spf on Zev.

I first met Lindsey Davidson Paley when I booked an appointment at her custom denim studio, With Love, Lenny in Los Angeles a few years ago. I discovered her via Instagram and as someone who lives their everyday life in denim, the idea of finding the perfect vintage pair and then CUSTOM FITTING them to your body?! I could have set a record with how quickly I booked an appointment. During the fitting Lindsey and I got to talking building brands, style and marketing and no surprise, totally hit it off.

Chelsea Cooper Braun: My love! I’m so excited to chat. What made you want to start this business? Why vintage denim?

Lindsey Davidson Paley: Same! I could go on and on about vintage denim. The quality is just unmatched, and the washes are everything, especially a 517. They have so much character and really tell a story. I always knew I wanted to work for myself in some capacity, but wasn’t exactly sure what it would look like. When COVID hit, it ended up being a blessing in disguise for me. Like many people during the pandemic, I started out tie-dyeing, but I was doing it on vintage denim. One day a client told me she was obsessed with her jeans, but needed to take them to a tailor because they were too big. That was my “aha” moment. I knew I could fill that gap. We love vintage, but it rarely fits quite right. And that’s how Lenny was born.

CCB: And you absolutely do fill that gap! For anyone who hasn’t been to Lenny yet, can you describe your process / what happens at a studio appointment?

LDP: Lenny is a by-appointment-only studio, with vintage denim tailored to your body and personalized to your style. Appointments are 45 minutes, and during your time with us we curate a selection of denim for you to try based on what you’re looking for and what we think will be most flattering on your body. Our tailoring focuses primarily on the hips, waist, butt, crotch, and inner thigh to make sure the jeans truly fit the way they should. We also do our absolute best to keep the original integrity of the denim, so they look as authentic and original as possible.

Also, for anyone wanting an in-person fitting but aren’t in the LA area, we are doing a pop-up in NYC in April, Charleston in May, and then planning out the rest of the summer. We’re currently looking at Chicago in July, Connecticut in August, and Miami sometime this winter.

CCB: Let’s discuss Levi’s style numbers. We hear a lot about 501s, but there are so many others out there. Do you have a favorite?

LDP: Yes! Let’s get into it. My favorite styles are a 517 and a 505 Orange Tab. The Orange Tabs were introduced in the late 60s as Levi’s explored more fashion-forward silhouettes. I love them because they’re a bit more fitted and generally really flattering. I’m also a huge fan of the 557, which has more of a relaxed bootcut fit. When clients come in, we love being able to educate them and introduce them to fits they may have never tried before.

CCB: I had no idea about the orange tab! Knowing these styles are the most popular, what is the difference between Levi’s 501s, 517s and 505s?

LDP: If you’re getting into vintage Levi’s, the three styles people ask about most are the 517, 505, and 501 — and they all fit very differently.

• The 501 is the classic. It has a button fly and a straight leg, and it’s what most people think of when they picture vintage Levi’s. They’re great, but they can be a little less universally flattering because the straight cut doesn’t always fit a curvier woman’s body.

• The 505 has a zipper fly and sits slightly lower on the waist than a 501. It also has a straighter leg. They tend to feel a little more relaxed overall and are often easier for people to wear right away.

• The 517 is my personal favorite. It also has a zipper fly, but instead of a straight leg it has a subtle bootcut (what I like to call a baby boot). It’s more fitted through the thigh and then flares slightly at the hem, which elongates the leg and ends up being incredibly flattering on so many different body types.

CCB: This is the info we’re all needing when looking for vintage denim! Why are those specific styles your favorites / what you buy for Lenny?

LDP: Honestly, I love so many different styles — a 521, 517, 569 and more. When we’re sourcing, we really try to buy a wide range of styles because everyone’s body is so different and what works for one person may not work for another. The only things I try to stay away from are skinny silhouettes and strong tapers. I’m often more focused on the wash than the actual style. A great wash with beautiful fading and character can make a pair of jeans feel really special.

CCB: What are the biggest mistakes you see people make when shopping for vintage denim?

LDP: One of the biggest things we run into is people bringing in photos of someone else and expecting the jeans to magically make them look like that person. Vintage denim is amazing because there are so many different silhouettes to choose from. Limiting yourself to one specific style just because you saw it on an influencer isn’t really how we like to approach things. The best way to find your perfect pair is to stay as openminded as possible and focus on what works for your body.

CCB: I see this SO often when styling as well. For anyone not in LA, what are some other ways to find the perfect vintage denim?

LDP: If you’re not in LA, we host pop-ups all over the country every month! We also offer virtual appointments, but they are definitely more limiting, and we like to be very transparent about that. If you’re just on the hunt for vintage denim, the most important thing is nailing down what styles look best on your body. Once you understand the silhouettes and rises that flatter you, it becomes so much easier to find great pairs.

CCB: That makes a ton of sense. What is your favorite way to style Lenny denim?

LDP: So many different ways! If it’s cold outside, I love pairing them with boots - a heeled pair if I’m going out and more of a lug sole for everyday. Even though I live in LA, I’m a huge jacket fanatic. I love throwing a great jacket over a sweater with my jeans. When it’s warmer out, I’m a jeans, tee, and loafer girl. And if I want to feel a little more elevated than a t-shirt or cardigan combo, I’ll go for a billowy top, especially if I’m wearing a tighter pair of denim.

CCB: Okay, shifting gears a bit. How would you describe your personal style?

LDP: Classic with a slight edge. I love a good pop of color here and there. As I’ve gotten older and able to invest in key staple pieces, I definitely lean more classic.

When it comes to jewelry though, I’m very much a more-is-more kind of girl. I’m usually wearing two or three necklaces, rings on as many fingers as possible, bracelets — and always a watch.

CCB: You have such great style! What’s in your proverbial shopping cart right now?

LDP: I always have so many things in my shopping cart…it’s bad. Especially recently. Now that I’m postpartum and getting back into real clothes (not just linen pants), I’m really excited for spring and summer. I’m obsessed with Jacques Marie Mage glasses, and I think The Row can do no wrong when it comes to shoes and bags. I’m also really into Dries Van Noten’s silk printed pants and everything in Loewe’s spring capsule, especially this brown leather jacket. And if the budget allows…I’m definitely eyeing a bag from Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel SS26.

CCB: I have been eyeing some JMM glasses as well! One of my favorite things about you is your honesty so let’s get real. Drop an unpopular opinion or hot take.

LDP: I would say trends are trends for a reason, but that doesn’t mean you need to hop on the bandwagon. Dress for your body, not for Instagram.

CCB: How many times can I agree? Okay, I end all interviews this way. What are your favorite spots in LA?

LDP: My favorite restaurant in LA is Craig’s. I’m honestly a pretty basic eater, and it’s such a fun date night spot. I’m not really a coffee shop girl since I don’t drink coffee, but I do like Verve in WeHo, and for great matcha I like Lynx in Studio City. For shopping, some of my favorites are Khaite, Toteme, Maxfield, Dôen, and Reformation. I’m honestly not a huge in-person shopper — I love doing it online — but walking around Melrose or Beverly Hills is always fun.

1. White Sneakers

LA is the city of casual and where there used to be Salomons, now there are white sneakers. Leather, canvas, tie, slip on. It’s all happening. I tried on this insane new Celine pair and DROOL. I absolutely love how they styled them above with white athletic socks and raw hem denim. Exactly how I’d wear them. They were an incredible soft lambskin leather, so very fragile, but j’adore. Massimo Dutti just launched these and they’re very similar at a more digestible price point. But honestly? I will forever love a classic pair of Keds. Heavy on the scuffs.

2. The Great Basics

When I tell you I am a basics connoisseur, that’s putting it lightly. This is a key focal point of what I start with when working with clients. There has to be the right cut, length, hand feel, sleeve length, underarm fit. I was shopping around Melrose this week and popped into The Great. I have and love their college sweatshirts (size up), but this men’s henley immediately caught my eye. Guys…I wore it out of the store. I also scooped up this tee in the heathered grey and am wearing it while I write this. I took a size 1 in both. I also might have already ordered the white in both as well. To my husband: it’s market research.

3. The Vintage Marche

A shop…that’s not really a shop? This appointment only spot is famously loved by Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber and for good reason. Founder Lili Aghaei curates an insane selection of vintage designer pieces, from bags to shoes to accessories. I snagged an appointment for one of my clients and the pieces are really that good in person. I scored a Phoebe Philo Era Celine bag and a vintage dark red Gucci travel wallet, while my client left with a 1995 navy Chanel clutch. So unique! 4. Carbon & Hyde

I’ve been looking for a little diamond and gold Z charm for my favorite Lucy Delius necklace, but wasn’t finding anything just right. So instead, I texted some inspo pictures to my friend and Carbon & Hyde co-founder, Oren, and she created the perfect piece for me. They’ll do custom which is fun, but their own designs and brand are next level. The quality is unmatched and everything is made in LA. I’ve had these huggies for a literal decade and I still wear them weekly. It also helps that Oren and her sister, co-founder Yarden, are two of the kindest people you’ll ever meet.

5. YSE Overachiever Eye Patches

I was sent these as a gift from the brand and had high hopes based on the reviews I was seeing online. Let me just say, they LIVED UP. They are somehow cooling + hydrating and stick right on your eyes. No product mess or slipping. 12/10. They also sent this SPF/primer and this vitamin c serum, both of which I now use daily.
